Jen DeNike: Escape Velocity

Curated by Mitra Khorasheh

signs and symbols, NY

September 5, 2018

signs and symbols presents Escape Velocity, an immersive performance workshop with film, video, sound and dance by artist Jen DeNike as part of artists & allies.

Escape Velocity will serve as an invocation for a new series of ballet works beginning September 5th at signs and symbols which will culminate in a solo project by Jen DeNike February 2019. A call and response inspired by her Scrying Ballet and film Another Circle from (2010). This live work-shop starts by considering the choreography of an infinite pirouette in opposition to the movement of bodies in space with sight or lack of sight. The performance will investigate ideas of perception; a blind person lacking external reference points walks in circular loops all the while believing they are walking in straight lines.

Dancers:
Mami Hariyama
Yui Hasegawa
Rieko Tsunoda

Many thanks to Hariyama Ballet
